One of the best desserts I have eaten in my life was a treacle tart. I do know that it was in England and I do know that it was delicious. I really don’t know why I was thinking of that, but that pleasant memory did give me a name for this font.

I am still learning my new font software, which is a bit of a slow process. The software I used for this font allows me to add several languages, which, hitherto, I couldn’t access.

So, in short, this is my most multilingual font ever: it even includes Vietnamese and a bit of Hiragana and Katakana for you to get creative with!

The ‘VanderHand’ font is a friendly and easy to use handwritten font. It is so loaded with ligatures it could easily pass for actual handwriting.
The font was created with a felt-tip brush pen and so there are natural thick and thin parts in the characters. All writing was done upright with tightly fit characters. As a result this font has a unique ‘instant logo’ quality. But you should really try this out for yourself.

O, and the font was written by Jeroen van der Ham.
It’s his handwriting. That’s why it’s called VanderHand.

The term starboard derives from the Old English steorbord, meaning the side on which the ship is steered. Before the steering wheel, boats were steered by an oar at the stern of the ship. Since most sailors were right handed, this is where you would find your steering oar!
Starboard is a rough, handmade, brushy kinda font. It was, of course, made with my favourite cheap brush and Chinese ink - resulting in a slightly eroded looking font.
Starboard comes with all the trimmings, including double letter ligatures for the lower case.

It’s an all-caps face, with 4 alternates for each letter and 2 for each numeral — some letters also have stylistic choices. For that spontaneous hand-painted feel, you know. Turn on the contextual alternates feature to automatically cycle all these variety of glyphs. Or pick your choices manually, a task that’s that nowadays is truly fun with the ease offered by some applications when the font has a feature called ‘access all alternates’, which is absolutely the case here!
